Burt Nadler, Assistant Dean, Director of the Career Center, University of Rochester

Burt Nadler has been Assistant Dean of the College and Director of the Career Center at University of Rochester since 1998. Prior, he was director of University of the Pacific’s Career Services from 1990 through 1998. He considers himself an experienced "job search coach." Burt has been assistant director, MBA placement coordinator, and career counselor at Southern Methodist University, and associate director of Dartmouth's Career and Employment Services. As Director of Recruiting for Strategic Planning Associates, a management consulting firm, Burt recruited MBAs from some of the most prestigious schools of business. As Manager of College Recruiting and College Relations for Merrill Lynch Consumer Markets he recruited undergrads and grads. For over 30 years he has actively examined “why candidates get hired and who does the hiring” from both sides of the college recruiting process. Specifically, he has focused curiosity and creativity on tools and techniques that enhance the efforts of college students, recent grads and experienced job seekers.

As a job search coach he teaches and reinforces skills required for successful search, including resume-writing, correspondence, and interviewing. For those he coaches “job search is simple, not necessarily easy,” because the process is broken down into easy to follow (yet challenging) behavioral steps and easy to accept motivational attitudes. To date, he has critiqued over 19,552 resumes (he does count) and worked with over 20,000 job seekers (he guesses, but doesn’t exaggerate).

Also, as reflected in his writings, presentations, and counseling style, Burt believes job search doesn’t have to be taken too seriously and that it is best undertaken with humor and positive affect. His recent releases, The Everything College Major Test Book, The Everything Cover Letter Book, 2nd Edition, and The Everything Resume Book, 2nd Edition, published by Adams Media are among the most comprehensive and up-to-date guides that empower readers to create effective documents used as cornerstones for dynamic job search efforts and to explore the relationships between majors and careers. Burt also authored, with his son, Justin, and his daughter, Jordan, Words You Should Know in High School, and, with Jordan, The Adams College Admissions Essay Handbook (also by Adams Media). Previously, he wrote Liberal Arts Jobs and Liberal Arts Power, two top selling Peterson's job search publications that were re-released in an updated and merged format in 1998. Naked at the Interview: Tips and Quizzes to Prepare You For Your First Real Job is another of Burt's books, released by John Wiley. Burt has shared ideas with students, alumni(ae), recruiters, career services professionals, and “anyone who will listen” in a variety of traditional, creative and virtual venues. He has written articles on career and job search, appearing in Delta Sky Magazine, Journal of College Placement, Wall Street Journal’s Managing Your Career, Careers and the MBA and, Careers and the College Grad.

Burt has presented at conferences hosted by National Association of Colleges and Employers, National Society of Experiential Education, National Association of Job Search Trainers, Western Placement Association, Career Development Association, Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program Alumni, and Western Regional Greek Council. He has conducted seminars for job seekers, recruiters, and career services professionals, enhancing recruiting efforts and teaching job search approaches. He has spoken to human resources and college recruiting professionals and employees at CitiBank, Hewlett Packard and Disneyland.

Burt graduated cum laude from University of Pennsylvania in 1975, with dual majors in Psychology and Sociology. In 1977 he earned a MS in Education from Stanford University and in 1978 he earned a MA in Psychological Services from University of Pennsylvania. From 1981-1982 he supplemented academics with doctoral coursework at Penn.
